The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.
Competitors are granted the right to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.
Other Changes
A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
