TikTok Content Creators Fueling Parallel Market for Unlicensed Slimming Drug

A shadow market for unlicensed weight-loss medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.

Experimental Treatment Gaining Popularity Online

Retatrutide, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning properties. Followers are encouraged to message these profiles privately for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Thriving Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of participants share comparison images, injection guides and claims of rapid British shipping. Sellers market the substance there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Learning About Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an experimental injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies indicate it could help patients lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Voice Worries

However, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unapproved medication in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to users injecting substances of unknown origin.

Some experts stated the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising price of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Enforcement

Selling retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be marketed or distributed for human use under the British medical regulations.

Some influencers attempt to circumvent the regulations by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but advertising and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer regulations, risking fines, prosecution or imprisonment.

Platform Response and Material Removal

According to the social media company, the platform has removed violative content and banned related hashtags and query recommendations. The organization said it was committed to maintaining the platform secure and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Online Trading Operations

Investigations also found communities with up to nine thousand members marketing retatrutide using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with numerous of users, filled with images of weight loss, glowing testimonials and step-by-step instructions for mixing or injecting at home.

Within minutes of entering one community, a vendor shared contact information, where the majority of purchases take place. The vendor sent an guidebook and promised shipping within two days. When asked whether the product was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a alleged laboratory certificate. None asked about weight, health issues or previous experience.

Product Information and Pricing

Within these groups, messages display dark colored packages with postal service stickers, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between powder vials, prepared at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens usually sold at £160 for 20 milligrams. When asked how much time a pen should be used, vendors give contradictory answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Safety Actions

A representative for the messaging service stated it regularly moderated dangerous material on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Cautions

“Individuals are administering substances they can’t verify. Although the science behind retatrutide is sound, these online products may not include what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor connected the increase in interest to recent price rises for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using online platforms. But fake injections are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she said.

Her staff has previously seen individuals injured by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We understand the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Statement

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental substance not yet approved … may subject patients to possibly significant health risks”.
