Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a clamor to include additional classifications to recognize unsung work and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games globally and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
